Hood Cleaning for Every Type of Commercial Kitchen in Ontario

Commercial kitchen exhaust systems come in all shapes and sizes. A wood-fired pizzeria produces a completely different kind of grease load than a hospital cafeteria running electric ovens. We've cleaned them all — and we know exactly what each one demands.

Restaurants & Food Service

Single to Multi-Location

From charcoal grills to deep fryers to wok stations, restaurant hood cleaning is our bread and butter. We work after hours so your kitchen is certified and ready before your morning prep crew shows up. No downtime. No disruption. Just a clean system and a certificate on the wall.

Hotels & Resorts

Complex, Multi-Kitchen Operations

Hotels don't have one kitchen. They have three or four — banquet, room service, main restaurant, sometimes a rooftop bar. We coordinate hood cleaning across all of them, scheduling around events and occupancy so the work never touches the guest experience.

Hospitals & Healthcare

Infection Control Protocols

Healthcare kitchens serve vulnerable patients. That changes everything about how we work. Our technicians follow containment procedures, use healthcare-compatible cleaning products, and minimize airborne particulates. Every job meets O. Reg. 67/93 and Accreditation Canada requirements.

Schools & Universities

Vulnerable Sector Screened

School cafeterias operate on tight budgets and tighter schedules. We offer multi-site volume pricing and summer scheduling programs so your entire district gets cleaned during break. All our technicians are vulnerable sector screened to work on school grounds.

Retirement & Long-Term Care

RHRA Compliant

Residents in long-term care homes deserve comfort. That means our hood cleaning crews use low-noise, low-odour procedures and work overnight. We follow RHRA protocols because the people living there shouldn't even notice we were in the building.

Not Sure How Often Your Kitchen Needs Hood Cleaning?

Every kitchen is different. We'll assess your operation, look at your cooking volume and fuel type, and recommend the right cleaning frequency so you stay compliant without overspending.

Why Ontario Kitchens Trust Power Hoods for Their Hood Cleaning

We've been doing this for over three decades. In that time, we've cleaned exhaust systems in downtown Toronto restaurants, hospital kitchens in Ottawa, school cafeterias in Thunder Bay, and hotel banquet halls everywhere in between. Here's what separates us.

Certified hood cleaning technician inspecting commercial kitchen exhaust system

Every Technician Is Trained, Certified, and On Our Payroll

We don't use subcontractors. Period. Every person on our hood cleaning crew is trained in NFPA 96 standards, hazardous chemical handling, working at heights, and confined space entry. When your facility manager or insurance auditor asks who cleaned your system, you'll have a name, a certificate, and a direct phone number.

"Power Hoods fits into our operational schedule without a hiccup. They clean our entire exhaust system to bare metal and hand us the kind of verifiable reporting that our corporate insurance policies require."

Why Professional Hood Cleaning Prevents Commercial Kitchen Fires

Here's something most kitchen operators don't think about until it's too late. Every time your kitchen runs a service, grease-laden vapour rises off the cook line and travels through your exhaust hood, into the ductwork, past the exhaust fan, and out through the rooftop unit. That vapour doesn't vanish. It cools, condenses, and sticks to every interior surface it touches. The hood walls. The duct lining. The fan blades.

Week after week, that grease builds up. Eventually, you've got a layer of combustible fuel running from your cook line all the way up to your roof. And that's where the real danger lives.

That's a fire waiting to happen.

A single spark from a flare-up on the grill. An overheated fryer. A malfunctioning burner. That's all it takes. Once grease inside your ductwork ignites, fire travels through the entire exhaust system in seconds. These fires burn hot, spread fast, and cause catastrophic damage. Kitchen exhaust fires are among the hardest to contain because the ductwork acts like a chimney — it feeds the fire oxygen and carries it upward through floors and ceilings.

The thing is, almost every single one of these fires is preventable. Regular professional hood cleaning removes the fuel source before it reaches dangerous levels. That's it. That's the entire equation. Remove the grease, remove the risk.

Beyond fire prevention, professional hood cleaning improves your indoor air quality, extends the lifespan of your exhaust equipment, and ensures your documented cleaning records satisfy insurance audit requirements. If your kitchen needs exhaust repair or installation, deep kitchen cleaning, or standalone duct cleaning, we handle that too.

Commercial kitchen hood cleaning overview

Don't let this happen to your business.

Regular professional exhaust cleaning is preventable maintenance.

But Fire Isn't the Only Risk You're Carrying. Neglecting your kitchen exhaust system in Ontario creates a chain reaction of problems that extend far beyond the kitchen itself.

Ontario Fire Code Fines Hit Hard

The penalties are not small. Individuals face fines up to $50,000 and corporations up to $100,000 on a first offence. Repeat violations under Part III proceedings can reach $1,500,000. That number is real. Regular hood cleaning eliminates the violation before an inspector ever walks through your door.

Your Insurance Can Deny Your Entire Claim

Most commercial property insurance policies require documented proof of regular professional exhaust cleaning. If you have a fire and can't produce current NFPA 96 compliance records, your insurer can — and very likely will — deny the entire claim. Years of premiums, gone. All because the cleaning wasn't documented.

Health Inspections Go on the Public Record

Ontario's Food Premises Regulation requires your ventilation system to properly remove smoke, fumes, and excessive heat. When that system fails because of grease buildup, the violation lands on your public inspection record. Every potential customer, every reviewer, every competitor can see it.

Fire Marshals Can Close You Down on the Spot

Ontario fire marshals have the authority to issue immediate closure orders for kitchens with non-compliant exhaust systems. Your kitchen stays shut until the problem is fixed, inspected, and cleared. For some operators, that's days of lost revenue. For others, it's the beginning of the end.

Your Staff Pays the Price Too

Clogged exhaust systems trap smoke, heat, and cooking odours inside the kitchen. That makes for uncomfortable working conditions, higher staff turnover, and real health concerns. Clean hoods improve indoor air quality, reduce kitchen temperatures, and make the working environment noticeably better for everyone on the line.

Professional hood cleaning eliminates all of it. The fire risk, the fines, the insurance exposure, the public record hits, the closures, and the staff issues. One service addresses every single one.

Power Hoods Systems provides NFPA 96 certified, fully documented hood cleaning across all of Ontario. We protect your property, your people, and your livelihood.

Our 7-Step Hood Cleaning Process — Cook Top to Rooftop

We don't wipe down what's visible and call it a day. Our technicians clean every component of your kitchen exhaust system down to bare metal. That's the standard NFPA 96 requires and the Ontario Fire Code enforces. Not mostly clean. Not close enough. Bare metal.

Here's exactly what happens when our crew arrives at your facility.

1

Step 1: Pre-Cleaning Inspection and Documentation

Before anyone picks up a tool, our lead technician inspects your entire exhaust system. We check the hood canopy, the baffle filters, ductwork access panels, the exhaust fan, and the rooftop unit. Every component gets photographed in its current condition. These 'before' photos become part of your compliance file. But we're also looking for things beyond grease — damaged access panels that need replacing, worn fan belts, fusible links that have been painted over or gone missing entirely, and grease patterns that suggest your cleaning frequency needs to change.

2

Step 2: Kitchen Protection and Preparation

Your kitchen is your business. We treat it that way. Before we start any hood cleaning work, we cover your cooking surfaces, prep areas, and flooring with plastic sheeting and absorbent pads. Everything near the exhaust system gets protected. When we pack up and leave, your kitchen looks exactly the way we found it. Clean, dry, and ready for service.

3

Step 3: Hood Canopy and Filter Cleaning

We pull all the baffle filters and soak them in a commercial degreasing solution that breaks down even heavy carbonized grease. While those soak, we work on the hood canopy itself — hand scraping, pressure washing, and getting into every corner of the interior. The grease trough, the plenum area behind the filters, all interior surfaces. Every weld seam, every corner, every joint gets cleaned to bare metal. The plenum area deserves special attention because that's where grease accumulates the heaviest.

4

Step 4: Exhaust Duct Cleaning — The Most Critical Step

This is the part of the job that matters most and gets neglected the most. The ductwork is where grease hides, where fire spreads, and where most cleaning companies cut corners. Using specialized rotary tools and commercial-grade degreasing agents, we clean the entire length of your exhaust ductwork — from the hood plenum all the way to the rooftop termination point. Every horizontal run, every vertical riser, every elbow and transition piece. Bare metal, all of it.

5

Step 5: Exhaust Fan and Rooftop Unit Cleaning

The exhaust fan pulls grease-laden air through your entire system. Over time, grease coats the fan blades, the housing, and the motor housing. That buildup reduces airflow efficiency, forces the motor to work harder, and shortens the equipment's lifespan. We clean it all — fan blades, housing, motor housing — everything comes back to bare metal. The rooftop grease containment unit gets inspected, emptied, cleaned, and serviced. We also clean up grease accumulated on the roof surface around the exhaust unit, which prevents long-term roof membrane damage.

6

Step 6: Filter Cleaning or Replacement

Your baffle filters are the first line of defence in your exhaust system. They catch grease before it enters the ductwork. When filters are bent, warped, or caked in carbonized grease, they stop doing their job — and everything downstream suffers. We thoroughly degrease every filter, inspect each one for damage, and reinstall them properly. If any filters need replacing, we'll flag them and recommend the right replacements.

7

Step 7: Final Inspection, Photo Documentation, and NFPA 96 Certification

After everything is cleaned, our technician walks the entire system one more time. Every component gets photographed in its cleaned state. Then you receive your full documentation package: before and after photographs of every section, a written service report detailing all areas cleaned with condition notes and maintenance recommendations, your NFPA 96 compliance certificate, and notes on any inaccessible areas — because fire inspectors specifically look for this disclosure.

NFPA 96 Hood Cleaning Frequency — How Often Does Your Kitchen Need Service?

If you operate a commercial kitchen anywhere in Ontario, this section applies directly to you. The Ontario Fire Code adopts NFPA 96 as the governing standard for kitchen exhaust system maintenance. That means every commercial kitchen in the province is legally required to have its exhaust system inspected and cleaned at specific intervals.

How often your kitchen needs hood cleaning depends on two things: what type of cooking you do and how much volume you push through the system.

What Fire Inspectors Actually Look For During a Kitchen Inspection

First, they want to see a current NFPA 96 compliance certificate posted visibly on the premises. No certificate means an automatic flag.

Second, they do a visual inspection of the hood interior and any accessible ductwork. They're looking for grease accumulation — the threshold is anything beyond 50 micrometres. If they can feel grease on a surface, you've got a problem.

Third, they check your baffle filters, fusible links, and access panels. Missing fusible links, painted-over links, or sealed access panels are all red flags that suggest the system hasn't been properly serviced.

After a Power Hoods hood cleaning, your documentation covers every one of these checkpoints. Our service report details what was cleaned, notes any inaccessible areas (which inspectors actually want to see disclosed), and your certificate proves the work was done to NFPA 96 standards.

Stay compliant. Stay open. Stay protected.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hood Cleaning in Ontario

It depends entirely on what kind of cooking your kitchen does and how much volume you push. NFPA 96 breaks it down clearly: solid fuel cooking like wood-fired ovens or charcoal grills requires monthly hood cleaning. High-volume operations — think 24-hour diners, charbroiling, wok stations — need quarterly cleaning. Moderate-volume kitchens typically need service every six months. Low-volume operations like school cafeterias or church kitchens need it once a year. If you're not sure where your operation falls, we'll assess it for free and recommend the right schedule.
